WATCH LIST: Places in Essex that have allowed pigeons to die trapped behind their netting and have been spoken to by the police and the RSPCA:

St Botolph’s Church, Colchester

Two pigeons were spotted lying dead side by side behind the netting.  A letter to the vicar asking for the replacement or removal of the netting to prevent further deaths prompted a response from the PCC secretary who said:

I am sorry that you were distressed by the sight of birds – presumably pigeons – trapped in the netting. We also are sorry that we have had to resort to this method to protect the church building against what I can only describe as the ravages of their presence.

We had to spend a lot of money cleaning and repairing the church tower and, after much consultation, were advised that netting was the most effective way form of protection.  You will understand that the church is a listed building, so we have to act upon the advice we are given.  I will pass on your concern to the church wardens, but think it unlikely that any change will be made.

The RSPCA and Essex Constabulary were made aware of the situation and have visited the Church to advise them of the legal situation.  The RSPCA inspector has spoken to the Church Warden about releasing trapped birds.  If you live in Colchester and care about pigeons please keep an eye on the Church’s netting.  If you see any trapped pigeons inform the warden and if possible keep photographic evidence.  We expect the church staff to behave with responsibility and compassion, but if they do not then please inform the RSPCA so that they can release the bird if it is still alive or consider prosecution if it has been  left to die.
